Private health cover is generally taken out to cover short term, curable illness or injury and more and more people are taking out health cover via workplace health insurance schemes or taking it out as their own prerogative. According to the report in the Telegraph, the reasons that people take out private health cover is fairly diverse but there are a number of common themes that seem to be prevalent amongst those who want to ensure that they are covered in the event of sudden injury or illness. Essentially, the primary concern that those suffering an illness or injury have is the basic hygiene levels of hospitals particularly in terms of the MRSA superbug and many want to take out private health cover plans that will not only negate the need for waiting lists but also ensure that consultations and treatment is carried out in top notch facilities. This fear about hygiene standards would appear to be justified as, according to the report in the Telegraph, as many as a quarter of health trusts don’t meet basic hygiene standards.

Health Cover – Patient’s Concerns

According to the report in the Telegraph, one of the most compelling reasons that patients give for seeking out private health cover is the general sense of feeling unwanted or ignored when visiting NHS hospitals. Speaking to the Telegraph, health cover expert, Julian Stainton, states, “Patients are worried and are becoming perceived as a mute ingredient of the NHS. Indeed, recent research intimated that 46 pc of NHS staff do not believe patients to be at the centre of what they do. My personal view is 'treat patients with disdain at your peril'”. With this in mind, it is of little surprise that the number of people seeking out private health cover is on the increase as people aim to ensure that they receive a more personal level of treatment in top facilities.

Health Cover – Sign of the Times

The are growing concerns for patients on a number of levels in terms of hospital treatment but one of the most pressing is highlighted by the rather alarming fact that in the early 1990’s there were only an average of 1000 cases of C-diff reported each year but in today’s hospitals it is closer to 1000 per week. According to the report in the Telegraph, this is compelling many to consider private health cover due to the fact that most private treatment facilities test patients for infections prior to admitting them which is why private health premises have few reported instances of infections such as C-diff.
